one

www.one.org

came to know about this while watching mtv one day
it's a campaign started by the americans to rally their fellow countrymen to try to put an end to poverty. and the ever increasing problem of AIDS esp in third world countries. i think it's a great compaign..a good cause. coz there are some people who have no idea how bad the situation is coz they're probably too pampered, sheltered or ignorant to bother about other things outside of their lives.
people sometimes forget that there's always a balance in things. so where there's extreme wealth..stinking rich people who don't think twice when spending hundreds & thousands of $$..there is also extreme poverty..where every little cent counts..

so far a few other countries such as canada, spain and japan have also joined in. i was hoping to be a part of this & sign the declaration of support when i found out singapore..is NOT part of this!

what my sis said in her blog about our local 'charity efforts' is right..
it's pure crap..it defeats the whole meaning of C H A R I T Y

Main Entry: char·i·ty
Pronunciation: 'char-&-tE
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural -ties
Etymology: Middle English charite, from Old French charité, from Late Latin caritat-, caritas Christian love, from Latin, dearness, from carus dear; akin to Old Irish carae friend, Sanskrit kAma love
1 : benevolent goodwill toward or love of humanity
2 a : generosity and helpfulness especially toward the needy or suffering; also : aid given to those in need b : an institution engaged in relief of the poor c : public provision for the relief of the needy
3 a : a gift for public benevolent purposes b : an institution (as a hospital) founded by such a gift
4 : lenient judgment of others

< from Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary >

people here have such a selfish approach to helping others..i mean of course the needy in singapore deserve any kind of help we can give but we only seem to care for ourselves..the only exception would be the help given to the tsumani victims..

anyways the fact is..i'm just extremely disappointed that we're a relatively influential country in this region yet we have no part in this worthwhile global effort to deal with poverty..

it's times like these (among others) when i'm ashamed to be a singaporean

i am curious as to why we should be bothered by the inability to sign a declaration of support. there are more proactive ways in which we could really change the lives of those in need. i disagree with you that Singaporeans embark in charitable efforts for selfish reasons. maybe you'd like to share what these selfish reasons are.

why shouldn't we be bothered? i was just expressing my disappointment that i couldn't lend my voice to the campaign that's all. coz i think of all the charity efforts i've ever heard about..this is one that i feel strongly for.
as for local charity efforts. i hate the way charity shows are carried out. why should we need anything in return when it comes to donation? i do know that some people don't care for the prizes..but isn't it ridiculous that the hosts of the shows are using attractive prizes and rewards to get people to call in to donate? wouldn't the charities benefit even more if ALL the prizes sponsored were converted into cash instead?
as for the selfish bit.. i feel that way because we only seem to be so active ( in all the wrong ways..prizes & all..! ) when it comes to things that affect singapore & singaporeans ( with the exception of the tsunami )
i know we're a small country..but we're still part of this world and we should be responsible to a certain extent of problems that plague the world? you know..show more support when it comes to helping others outside of our little island? and not only when disaster stikes like the tsunami?
i know i'm not the most articulate lady around but that post is not meant to be an anti-singapore statement..it was inspired by my diappointment that singapore isn't part of the 'one' campaign as well as the nkf show 2 weeks ago..one of the BEST example of a show for a good cause but done atrociously.
ok your turn..tell me why i shouldn't think singaporeans are selfish?
